MathematicaTM is a symbolic computation package created by Wolfram Research Inc.
It is useful in both AP Calculus BC and science projects. The ability to use MathematicaTM is useful for most technical undergraduate degrees and in many professional careers. MathematicaTM is a complex environment - therefore, making the first steps during high school or even middle school is an excellent start.
It is recommended. Most students receive a free student license if they participate in Math Kangaroo or in Math Prize for Girls, as Wolfram Research, Inc. sponsors these two competitions. Otherwise, a student license can be purchased for under $100 on the Wolfram site.
MathematicaTM is a vast environment and its various uses cannot be covered in an introductory class, nor does it make sense to practice all possible uses. We focus on practical uses at a high school level: how to produce experiments that can form the bulk of a science project, what to expect and what not to expect from Mathematica, how to 'help' Mathematica produce the desired form for the result, and more.
Computational Science focuses on using the symbolic computation system to build science projects. This class is usually offered during summer break when students have more time for enriching their skills.
Computational Calculus focuses on using symbolic computation in conjunction with the AP Calculus BC class or an equivalent. This class is usually offered during winter break.
No. This is a 6-hr class that presents a variety of applications, mostly in physics. Students interested in physics may also find this class useful. For more advanced uses and one-on-one project mentoring, we offer individualized help starting at our usual hourly rates (plus surcharge for short notice).
All classes are delivered online using our proprietary Lignab Learner technology. To use Learner you only need a set of headphones. To receive sound, whiteboard and shared screen you only need to press a link. The sound is very clear, the connection is automatically maintained open: it is just like being in the same room as the instructor. The lessons are live, the instructor reviews questions sent by students on the spot and administers quizes. Thanks to a clean, easy to use, minimal interface the student will quickly adapt to this style of work.
