Why should parents purchase classes from us?

Because at GOTM, we do exactly what parents were hoping to do when they pulled the child out of school: we provide real learning. Our only mandate is to empower the student to process information creatively and to connect concepts so as to satisfy his/her natural curiosity. At GOTM we have the right mix of pedagogical and subject matter competence, or should we say, excellence, to immerse students in a serious, yet attractive study.

Unlike other providers, our focus is not to provide a number of lessons, however good, about a specific topic. Our focus is to transfer an array of working, reasoning and enquiring skills that are needed for the student to operate independently and skillfully in that topic. This transfer is not simple, nor is it fast, but we work at it constantly. Those who take lessons with us in the long term show very, very good benefits.

Our classes focus on building reasoning skills, execution skills and healthy independent work habits. We do not teach by rote. We help students understand the material in a logical, interconnected manner, so that long term rentention and control of the concepts is achieved.

What classes are offered to Ocean Grove students?

Is our curriculum different?

Yes, it is. Even though we try to follow the textbook as closely as possible, the order in which we teach concepts, especially for arithmetic, is quite a bit different. Also, our curriculum classes introduce additional material that is needed to build a cohesive knowledge structure and that is not necessarily part of the teaching standards for a particular state.

Do we provide your ES with a list of CA Standards?

Yes, we list the CA standards that we cover, for the convenience of your ES. We also provide you, same as any other student, with an informal progress report. Depending on the duration of the course, you may receive a midterm report and a final report or just a final one.

Is our teaching style different?

Yes, it is. We explore around each topic in order to foster a creative, inquisitive approach. Our classroom examples are not repetitive (except when absolutely necessary) but diverse, probing the limits of the knowledge acquired. We not only learn why and how but also what the limits of applicability are. We emphasize connections inside the material.

What materials do we use?

Our materials do not repeat for a period of 2 years. This means that a student can continue to take the same level class (such as, for instance, AMC 10) for as long as two years and always get different problem sets as homework, quizzes, and class problems.

For curriculum classes we use lecture notes developed at GOTM. Students receive lecture notes and homework assignments at each lesson, followed by answer keys and full silutions after they turn in their work.
